10 - Dressed to Kill - This film should be celebrated as one of those purely cinematic experiences, which these days are all too few and far between. 9- Wes Craven's New Nightmare - An ingenious, cathartic exercise in illusion and fear. 8- Scream - Fans of the genre can enjoy the way it plays with horror's conventions. Others can just chew their fingers in fright. 7- The Texas Chainsaw Massacre - The Texas Chain Saw Massacre loses none of its intensity as the years go by. 6- The Bird with the Crystal Plumage - Argento's decision to focus more on tense plot twists and less on gore (there's relatively little here) gives this an audience beyond the usual hardcore horror fan. 5- Halloween - John Carpenter and Debra Hill's film is a genuine landmark in the horror-thriller genre. 4- Pandora's Box - Bold for its time, this restored, uncut version is a touch slow at some points, but its star glows throughout. 3- A Nightmare on Elm Street - What makes Freddy truly terrifying, and an inspired invention on Craven's part, is that he exists not in the real world but in the shadowy realm of dreams. 2- Psycho - The music, the setting, the shower scene, the mother in the cellar... everything about this iconic film has passed into cinema history. 1- Deep Red - A tough, uncompromising tale from Dario Argento.
