El Coyote, a drifter with a dark past wanders into a desolate ghost town in Northern Mexico called La Cruz where he meets his destiny.
The Sheriff encounters El Coyote on the outskirts of town and recognizes him from his past. The Sheriff tries to shoot El Coyote but his gun won't go off. Spooked by El Coyote, the Sheriff hurries back to town to rally his deputies.
They set a trap for him with the local storeowner Manuel, who drugs El Coyote and leads him to an ambush. The Sheriff shoots El Coyote in the neck and leaves him for dead. Javier, a kid who witnessed the attack, takes El Coyote to an abandoned hacienda on a hilltop overlooking the town.
Javier gets his mother, Olivia the local faith healer, to save El Coyote. Olivia mends his wounds and performs a ritualistic cleansing on him. El Coyote is tormented by visions of the people that he killed while in a satanic cult that smuggled drugs. Olivia rids El Coyote of his demons and he renounces his evil ways.
El Coyote wakes up the next day and remembers how he knows the Sheriff. El Coyote was double crossed by the cult's leader El Brujo. The Sheriff was the corrupt cop that El Brujo hired to arrest El Coyote.
As El Coyote recuperates, Javier tells him how the Sheriff killed his father and took over the town, forcing everyone to toil in his marijuana fields. Javier also tells him about the marijuana crop that the Sheriff is going to sell to Luis, the local drug lord in a couple of days. El Coyote now knows what he must do to save Javier and Olivia, and kill the Sheriff
The Sheriff learns about El Coyote, the man he arrested so long ago. El Coyote escaped from jail, sacrificed El Brujo, and stole his satanic powers. The Sheriff believes that he has killed El Coyote until the bodies start piling up around him. El Coyote kills the deputies one by one as the Sheriff goes mad and turns to the dark side.
In the mean time Olivia struggles to provide for her son Javier and is forced to work as a prostitute. Javier is always taunted by the other kids and deputies about his mother. El Coyote gives Javier the money he steals from the deputies he kills, so that he and his mother can get out of town.
When Luis comes to buy the harvest, the Sheriff double crosses him killing him and his henchmen. El Coyote and Javier lure the Sheriff and the deputies into a deadly trap. El Coyote kills the remaining deputies. As the Sheriff tries to escape, El Coyote shoots him. The Sheriff crashes into a tree and his truck bursts into flames.
Thinking that he has killed the Sheriff, El Coyote goes to the headquarters to find Luis and his henchmen dead. He discovers the money that Luis brought to buy the marijuana harvest just as he hears a voice outside calling his name.
El Coyote goes outside to find the Sheriff still alive, holding Javier hostage. El Coyote and the Sheriff face each other in a stand off. They both shoot and the Sheriff falls dead. Javier stands there unharmed. El Coyote stumbles back and grabs his chest. He is fatally wounded and falls to the ground. Before he dies he gives his knife to Javier.
The town's people cremate El Coyote that night. The next day El Coyote is back on his donkey riding off into the sunrise. The legend of El Coyote is born.
