Chapter 11
3 days later Joe was free again. I went to his house and knocked on his door.
Joe: Hey, Mariya!
Mariya: Joe, we need to talk.
Joe: You sound like my mom...
I grabbed his hand and pulled him into his room.
Mariya: Why did you do that?
Joe: Do what? I don't understand this conversation.
Mariya: Why did you tell your mom it was your fault? It was MY fault!
Joe: Because... I didn't want you to get in trouble...
Mariya: But... it wasn't right... I should have been punished. I didn't want you to be punished.
Joe: It was fine! I read my book.
Mariya: Book? What book?
Joe: It's called The Shining, it's really scary.
Mariya: I don't wanna hear about it.
(author's note: I'm reading that book. I saw the movie and it was AWESOME)
Joe: Well, I'm gonna tell you anyway. It's by Stephen King. He writes a bunch of horror books. He wrote "It", which is about a clown, and the Stand... I don't know what that one's about. But then there is The Mist...
Mariya: What about it?
Joe: I dunno I haven't read the book.
I slapped his arm and said:
Mariya: So, are you gonna tell me about The Shining?
Joe: Ok. So this guy, Jack, got a job to look after this hotel somewhere in Colorado.
He had a son and a wife and they all went there to stay the winter. Oh, and Jack was an author.
Joe tells me about the story and I start having a panic attack.
Joe: So he writes "a book" and one day his wife looks at it and it says--
Mariya: I'd rather not--
Joe: All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. And it just says that all over the place!
Mariya: *sighs* Wanna go for another walk? We can bring a watch this time.
Joe: Ok!
Joe grabbed his watch and my hand and we walked into the kitchen.
Joe: Mom? Can we go for a walk again? *he holds up the watch*
Denise: Be back by 5. An take your brother. He's been bored all day.
Mariya: Ok.
We walk to Nick's room and I knock on the door. He opens it and...
Mariya: Hey, dude.
Nick: What's up, dude? *smiles*
Mariya: Nothin' much. We were wondering if you wanted to go for a walk with us.
Nick: Really? Awesome!
He walked out in the hall and closed the door.
Nick: Let's go!
We all walk outside and go to the field in the woods again.
Nick: Why is this here?
Mariya: I don't know... *laughs* It's in a random spot, isn't it?
Nick: Very.
Joe: So, what do you want to do?
Mariya: Well, we won't be getting struck by lightning.
Joe: *murmurs* Or kissing?
Nick: What?
Mariya: *giggles* Nothing.
Nick: Whatever. I'm gonna go climb a tree.
Nick went off and climbed to the top of a tree and yelled:
Nick: HOLY CRAP!
Joe: What?
Nick: It's a bir-ow!
Joe: What happened?
Nick: I don't know... *murmurs* Did you peck me, Mr. Bird?
Mariya: *laughs* Get down from there!
Nick: Ok, mother.
Mariya: I've been told that twice today!
*Nick starts climbing down. It was a big tree, so Joe and I had time to whisper a conversation*
Joe: So, how was the kiss?
Mariya: What?
Joe: Sorry... the kiss.
Mariya: Ohh... lame!
Joe: What?
Mariya: Kidding!
Joe: Jerk!
We started pushing each other around and at one time we fell over.
Joe: Are you ok?
Mariya: *laughing* Ow!
Joe: Maybe...
Mariya: No, Nick is here.
Joe: Like he'd tell.
Mariya: You never know.
Joe: I do. Nick is my brother.
He leaned in but I moved away.
Joe: What?
Mariya: No.
Joe: Yes?
Mariya: No! I'm not starting this again. *giggles*
Joe: Just one.
Mariya: You had one. 3 days ago.
Joe: *does a puppy-dog face*
Mariya: Stop it!
Joe: No... *fakes tears*
Mariya: You cried and your tear got in my eye!
Joe: Oh, sorry. *smiles*
Mariya: *looks over and sees Nick is covered by the leaves* Quick one.
Joe: Yay!
He leans in and kisses me, but it wasn't quick. It was at least 5 seconds.
Mariya: That wasn't quick! Get up!
What we didn't know was that there was a clearing in the trees right where Nick was. He had looked over and saw us kiss. His mouth was wide open.
I'm surprised he didn't fall out of the tree.
