Visual Storytelling/ FTV130 - Final Project
Color Corrected Version (It does not look great on Facebook)
Comedy/ Horror - 5min
First of all, thank you for watching my movie. Just in case, you are interested in learning a little bit more about the movie, here is the production note.
I had this idea for my dream sequence before, but since I was super busy (as usual), I did not have enough time to develop the idea. However, I had another cool idea for my final and I and my friend are working on the script, but since there was no dialog allowed for this project, I decided to come up with another idea. In addition, my teacher did not like the idea since it is too much for visual storytelling. Anyway, I could not have that much shooting time since I was working on thesis movies. So, I wanted to do a simple idea or single character. Then, I somehow went back to the idea.
The shooting date was the last day of Thanksgiving break. We shot this from 6pm to midnight for the entire movie. I had a shot list and brief script which explained everything we needed to know. The final product was really close to what I had on the paper, so I am happy with that. One challenge on this project was to shoot the minimum shots and tell the story. (I usually takes a lot of shots and angles and stuff, but this time, I tried to do everything as simple as I can.) In terms of some points, I think I accomplish that.
Since I lost the location on the day of shooting, I decided to shoot it at my apartment. I did all the production design and cleaned up the room. One thing I hate about the movie is probably the neat white wall. I wish I had more contrast in the picture. Anyway, we shot entire thing in a day, and I really appreciate Adam and Nate for their help.
We shot the movie on XL2 with 24p. Although we had lights only from home dept, We compromised some stuff, but most of them are lit well for the condition we had, and I am happy with the look. Nate did really good job in terms of moving quick but decent lighting. Also, Adam brought the great acting and comedy into the movie. Without these great help, the movie would not be done.
So, moving to the post. I probably cut around 7 times. Originally, I had 7 minutes but finally it becomes 5min. With getting many feedbacks, I cut the begining shorter and shorter. Thank you for people who gave me advise. Even though, I may be cut some more things, I needed to stop cutting at some point and move into the next step. After cutting, I started to do the after effects shots. The hardest shot was when he opened the door. It took forever to fix the problem. Probably, I spent around 5 days for the entire special shots, and I am pretty happy with my improvement on after effects. Personally, I enjoy the gun sequence even by myself. After that, I worked on sound design with putting music, it worked great. Sound design is always really important to make a movie. Pretty much everything you hear is sound effects in this movie. Also, i tell some story through the sound, so you may figure out more details of story with it.
Through the production, what I have learned is that my poor storytelling ability. I see the weakness of storytelling of mine. I know a lot of people who can do much better job to come up with idea, which frustrates me this semester a lot. But, again, I know my weakness of filmmaking process, but I am trying to overcome it. As you know, it is really hard.... My story is always driven by story and not character. Figuring out the lack of creativity is difficult thing to over come.... but I will someday.
Anyway, people enjoy watching this, and I will produce the better thing next semester for sure. I need to trust myself, right, meanwhile I doubt it too.
Thank you for reading my poor English and enjoying my movie.
